Some observations on the Academy Awards

-The best song went to "It's a hard out here for a pimp," proving once again that people will vote for anything if they think it will be funny.

-Jennifer Garner's boobs are huge. They are.

-Jon Stewart's Itzhak Perelman jokes are very good.

-George Clooney is gracious and eloquent.

-The "In Memorium" sequence is always one of my favorite parts of the award show, and not in some weird, morbid way.

-That David Straithairn guy is quite an actor, isn't he?

-What is William Hurt doing with a nominiation for best supporting actor? I mean, Hurt is a good actor, and I liked "A History of Violence" just fine, but Hurt's in it for like 6 minutes, in a weird, quasi-inconsequential role.

-Converesly, I'm glad for Clooney, but I'm disappointed Paul Giamatti was not recognized for his outstanding work in "Cinderella Man." And though he was not nominated, Craig Bierko rocked the hell out of that movie.

-Will Smith? Strangely unfunny. Also, I haven't seen any of these foreign films. I am a cultural philistine.

-That guy accepting for "Tsotsi," whoever he was, gave a very good speech.

-Stewart, don't hate on Scorcese.

-I just learned that Reese Witherspoon was paid 15 million dollars for acting in "Legally Blonde 2." 15. million. dollars. Oh, and she won an Oscar, I guess.

-Dustin Hoffman. C'mon, dude. A little more energy, please.

-Larry McMurtry. Man, I know you're a cowboy and grizzled and all that shit. And I know you don't give a shit what anybody thinks. And I know you're a famous writer. BUT PLEASE DON'T WEAR FUCKING BLUEJEANS TO THE ACADEMY AWARDS! PLEASE! Also, "Brokeback Mountain" was a story in a magazine, not a book.

-Uma Thurman = Not A Movie Star. Seriously. What the fuck has she been in? Quentin Tarantino movies? And?

-Oh god. Are we really having Jack Nicholson present best picture? Hey, way to not fuck up reading the teleprompter, Jack.

-Crash?

Questions, in a slightly defensive tone:

Did you see Hustle & Flow? I finally did, I'm happy "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" won the Oscar -- it's a good song within the film, and it's too bad the performance was horrendous and over the top at the awards show. I was smiling broadly when they won, not because it's funny, but because hip hop is being recognized.

Did you see Walk the Line? Reese Witherspoon can be assessed by more than her Legally Blonde roles.

What do you have against Uma Thurman and Jack Nicholson? Seriously, you're starting to sound bitter.

Did you see Crash? I did, and despite the mixed bag of criticism it received, I firmly belive that it deserves praise and the Oscar. I was surprised it won, and I was expecting Brokeback Mountain to be the winner, but not because Crash isn't deserving of the award.

Hey - I have nothing against Reese, Crash, pimps, hip-hop, whatever. Try not to read these light-hearted posts too literally.

But while we're at it, I will maintain that Uma Thurman is not a movie star. With which of her films aside from the Tarantino pics am I to be impressed? Be Cool? The Truth About Cats And Dogs? The Avengers? She's not even great in the (few) great movies she gets cast in. We can do better than Uma.

And I'm sick of Nicholson. His schtick is old and his time has passed. Let's have somebody else up there presenting the big award. And he barely read the names of the movies and producers correctly. I know it's late, and I know you've had a lot to drink, Jack, but this is important. The rest of the world is still free to lionize him.

alright. point taken. I've settled down.

You still didn't answer most of my questions: again, have you seen any of those damn movies?

I don't mind Nicholson, but if you make a few suggestions as to who should present the award instead, maybe I'll see your point.

I think your baseball posts are funnier and more "light-hearted." I'd tell you to work on your movie humor, but really, I just want more baseball humor... jocks are better buts to your jokes than the pretty people.

I haven't seen any of these movies, but I just got back from Block Party and I recommend it.
