"Attached you will find the outlines of a proposal that includes ideas from CBS News, CBS Entertainment, MTV networks and Simon & Schuster publishers," Betsy West, a CBS News senior vice president, wrote to Private Lynch's military representatives. "From the distinguished reporting of CBS News to the youthful reach of MTV, we believe this is a unique combination of projects that will do justice to Jessica's inspiring story."
CBS Entertainment executives, the proposal said, "tell us this would be the highest priority for the CBS movie division, which specializes in inspirational stories of courage." Simon & Schuster, it said, "is extremely interested in discussing the possibilities for a book based on Jessica's journey from Palestine, West Virginia, to deep inside Iraq."
MTV Networks, the letter went on, was offering a news special, a chance for Private Lynch and her friends to be the co-hosts of an hourlong music video program on MTV2, and even a special edition of its hit program "Total Request Live" in her honor. "This special would include a concert performance in Palestine, West Va., by a current star act such as Ashanti, and perhaps Ja Rule," the proposal said.
I'm real glad Lynch got out okay. But the attention around this Pentagon-hyped and staged story is absurd. CBS News should be ashamed to involve itself in this circus; the Lynch incident is not news, it's entertainment. But throwing all the blame on CBS News is unfair. All television news engages in this sort of thing to one degree or another, though there are important distinctions, but the reason that non-stories like Lynch, Laci Peterson, J-Lo and Ben, Martha Stewart, etc., increasing wind their way from entertainment into what's now labled "news" is that we, the American audience, have an appetite for sensationalism. And it's growing. In and of itself, the hype surrounding stories like the ones aforementioned might not be a bad thing. Yet taken in a larger context, the circus that surrounds these sideshows takes attention away from genuine, important news stories. For example, what's going on in Ndola, Congo, where the French government just sent in combat troops to try and restore order? If your reply is "Congo what now?" or something similar, I'm sorry, you need to be aware of this, if only that means, "yes, I understand there is a civil war going on there and a lot of people are getting killed." That would be fine. The quiz on Congolese towns, rivers, national festivals, geology, ornithology, etc., will come later....
(Also, note to neanderthal French haters-how many of you were aware of this troop deployment? Does this action, taken in conjunction with the stories of French troops deployed in two or three other combat zones in Africa, square with your ignorant slander of anyting Gallic?) There are too many important stories going on every hour of every day for news outlets to devote one minute to the intricacies of Winona Ryder's shoplifting trial, Monica Lewinsky's new show, and, yes, the "heroic rescue" of Jessica Lynch.
Bottom line. Don't watch the TV news. Ever. Pick up a newspaper or get online and read a decent publication. You'll make the nation just that much more smarter.
Posted by mike at June 16, 2003 10:57 AMI am a Special operations soldier. I have been deployed to many countries since i have been in. I have seen many hardships. i have friends who have died doing there job defending this country. I have friends who have died in the Phillipines, Afganistan, and Somalia. They did not receive such recognition and aplause as Jessica Lynch did, nor would they have expected it. For this girl to be called a hero makes me embarrased for my country. I would have more respect for this kid if she would come clean with the real story. The media failed to mention the other soldiers who died, or the SF guys who rescued her. Who are the real heroes? She's home now. Living it up as a hero. THIS IS GARBAGE AND I QUIT!
A Special Forces Soldier
Posted by: Mike on August 27, 2003 04:02 PMJessica Lynch is not a hero! What the hell did she do to be called a hero? The idiodic media said she fought to the end...by who's account? they're all dead! Hell, even she admits she "can't remember anything".
She ran out of the Army as soon as she had her golden opportunity. She is a pathetic example of a hero.
Read some of the "non-affiliated" press for real accounts of what happened. I am a proud American serving my country (18 years and counting), but I can't say I'm that naive to believe that crap they are saying about her. Give credit where it's due.
This whole Jessica Lynch thing is sickening. How does someone who gets lost, then sent to a hospital and rescued considered a hero? What does "hero" even mean anymore? Three awards for her heroism? Give me a break.
Posted by: Concerned Civillian on November 2, 2003 06:19 PMI agree and am completely surprised at this horse shit going on. I understand that the administration and the media are working together to highlight any kind of positive event that ever took place in Iraq thus far. She deserves only a purple heart and nothing more. She has no right to those other medals, I do not remember all the others that she got. I do grant her respect for her awknowledgement of her story being blown way out of proportion. I also respect that she admits to not remembering very much. If anything, the special force unit deserve the medals over her, they should be the real heros. What hero needs to be resuced? What hero does nothing? What kind of hero gets lost, has a jammed gun, gets beaten up and raped and then later on...being rescued? I feel bad for her but I am disgusted at our country for claiming her to be a hero.
Posted by: Colin on November 8, 2003 05:59 AMTwo things and I'm out. First, why is Pfc. Lynch wearing a beret (looks like special forces) in the parade she was in?? I was also a supply clerk in the Army and I never wore one. Also, she has a Sgt. boyfriend?? When I was in, this was called fraternization and the Sgt. would be reprimanded. Who's taking crazy pills in the Pentagon???
Posted by: P Foley on November 9, 2003 03:59 PMFirst I will applaud her for saying she is not a hero. But a book and a movie come on. She is disgracing those who did die for this country regardless of her admission. I am glad she admits she is not a hero. It is unfortunate that my frends and I are still serving and I have had to watch my friends be buried fighting against what she threw her hands up at. "Her weapon jammed" give me a break the only reason for that is her own fault. Improper and I mean severly time elapsed overlooking of cleaning your weapon would only cause that. To give you an idea of this would be to never clean your weapon. The M16A2 and the M-4 are very reliable and only never cleaning it with all of the sandstorms and occasional muzzle in the dirt would cause that. But I am not suprised as her MOS probably wouldn't emphasize weapons maintenance. I am totally appalled that our military would stoop so low to use her gender as a rallying point as she obviously ignored common soldeir skills to maintain the M16A2. Her and her superiors should be reprimanded instead of congratulated. Why is she trying to make money off of this. Tell them all to leave you alone and pray for your comrades, and admit you did not live up to the seven army values.
Posted by: Heady on November 11, 2003 07:37 AMBy the way I almost forgot my uncle earned three bronze stars with 5th group SOG in Vietnam for fighting the enemy not having a malfunction with his weapon and getting captured. Why are we disgracing his memory and thousands of other Vets with the degrading of awards.
Stop the Bullshit Please
Not only is Jessica Lynch NOT a hero, she is a selfish ingrate who said she was "too busy" to meet with Mohammad, the Iraqi civilian that saved her white-trash arse!!
Posted by: sue on November 11, 2003 06:01 PMHow many of you that have "commented" on this site were actually in Iraq? Thats what I thought.
Posted by: J on November 11, 2003 09:17 PMP Foley, Jessica Lynch was wearing the beret because ALL SOLDIERS IN THE ARMY NOW WEAR BERETS! Shinseki got that started when he was CSA (chief of staff of the army), but I guess you've been out of the loop.
And she has a Sgt. boyfriend from a different unit, so it isn't frat. its non chain of command.
I agree that the girl isn't a hero, but don't blame her for it. Blame the bullshit media that inflated all of these stories while forgetting about the other pfc in the unit who killed 9 iraqis, or her first sergeant who died protecting her, or the many other soldiers who have done far better things.
alex
ps: she wasnt the one that got lost, the convoy leader, probably the platoon leader, did. so its not on her that they were lost...
Come on people.
hero or not.......the "rescue " was a staged piece of crap from your military. any dickhead could see through that. check out the BBC files on this so called rescue with crappy US military pretending to be tough.
Get a life twats
come on.
The real crime here is that the so called rescue was staged by the military. The BBC has reported that the hospital staff tried to get her back but were fired upon by the intelligent American soldiers.
Get your facts right you idiots
Okay, I'm glad we got comments going here. Keep it going. But I don't think we need to call Jessica Lynch a "bitch," for getting captured. I don't know the details, but this post wasn't about blaming her.
Alex is right, blame the media and the Pentagon for hyping this nonsense. And J, there's no need to put quote marks around "commented." In the "English" language we "usually" put quote marks around "words" to indicate sarcasm or "irony" (look it up, J). No one needs to have served in Iraq to "comment" on "this." Though those that have served there are certainly welcome.
Posted by: Mike on November 12, 2003 11:22 PMThis shy, aw shucks routine Jessica Lynch is playing is pathetic. She says she was used for propaganda by the government. Yeah, and your're so offended you go in front of every camera in America to tell us about it. She didn't do shit to warrant any attention and should be embarrassed for milking it to death. What the hell is a five foot nothing, 95 pound girl doing in a combat area? This bitch couldn't fight off a cold.
Posted by: wayne on November 14, 2003 11:12 PMShoshana who? The media has turned her into a Princess Diana-like pop-icon making American culture look hopelessly pathetic. If you really want to see pathetic, check out the message board at jessica_lynch.com (or jessica-lynch.com, can't remember).
I hated her hyped up bullshit from the beginning but didn't blame her. Plus after her homecoming parade, I thought she was awsome for the way she conducted herself. Now she is a media whore in training.
Donald Walters (don't remember his rank) was the "blond" who was "stabbed and shot" while "fighting to the death". This information was broadcasted over Iraqui airwaves but mistaken for Lynch by US intelligence.
PFC Patrick Miller, who was wittnessed fighting and risking his life, was awarded the silver star and is disturbed by the Lynch hype but will not elaborate.
Army Sgt, Cassaundra Grant lost both her legs and was leaving Walter Reed the day the Lynch story was reaching high phony sensationalism.
Jessica Lynch is suppose to be on Larry King on Monday. I hope that someone will call in and bring her back to Earth.
Posted by: slick on November 16, 2003 12:07 AMIs Jessica Lynch the best the U S Army can come up for a hero? What would Audy Murphy say? Its all Bullshit!
